Documentary Workshop
Do you have a great idea for a documentary, but no idea how to bring your idea from concept to the screen? Do you want invaluable production techniques that can make your projects more professional? This four-week course will teach you the basics of producing documentaries for television, and help make your film broadcast-quality. You will get professional guidance and instruction from international festival winner and three-time Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Rudaitis. Ron has produced and directed many successful documentaries, including The Italian Americans, episodes of ESPNs SportsCentury, A Bridge Between Silence and Sound, and Farming the Future: Farm Life on Long Island, which recently received an Emmy Nomination for Best Documentary. His films have aired on over 250 public and commercial television stations throughout the country.
March 1
WEEK 1: GETTING STARTED Featuring video presentations and in-depth discussion, week one will provide an overview of what a television producer does, and the many different skills and personnel that come together to make a successful production.
March 8
WEEK 2: STAGES OF PRODUCTION Week two will feature in-depth discussion of all stages of documentary production from pre-production to post-production including: research & development, focus groups, consultants, script development, interview techniques, music and archival footage selection, location shooting, narration, transcription, editing, and more.
March 15
WEEK 3: FUNDING & DISTRIBUTION Youve shot and edited your film. What now? An in-depth look at getting your film to the marketplace (television, film festivals, internet). You will also get an insiders look at perhaps the greatest showcase for the independent filmmaker: Public Television, as well as a discussion on the grant-writing process, and a look at possible funding sources.

WEEK 4: MAKE YOUR PITCH Week four gives you the chance to pitch your own documentary film ideas and get professional advice and guidance that will allow you to refine your proposal and be a step closer to making your dream film a reality.
