The Lord of the Rings (1978) | Newcastle Castle
All the magical adventure of J.R.R. Tolkiens fantasy classic will come to life in this screening of director Ralph Bakshis animated tale of the enchanted land of Middle-earth.
When a dangerous and powerful gold ring falls into his hands, courageous Hobbit Frodo embarks on an epic journey. Along with the mighty Wizard Gandalf and some daring Elves, he defends his homeland from the Dark Power that would destroy it.
Part of Newcastle Castles Swords and Sorcery month, this rare screening of the ambitious 1978 film takes place in the Great Hall of Newcastle Castle Keep in the run-up to Tolkien Weekend 2016.
While nowadays overshadowed by Peter Jacksons live action trilogy, Bakshis striking interpretation represented a bold attempt at bringing to life an epic story that had previously been thought of as unfilmable.
Please note: This event takes place in the Great Hall, which is unfortunately inaccessible to wheelchair users.
