THE WITNESS  August 19  August 25  dir. James D. Solomon, Biography / Mystery / Crime / Documentary, Not Rated, USA, English, 2016, 89 min.
This extraordinary documentary looks at one of the most infamous of all modern crime storiesthe 1964 murder, in Queens, of Kitty Genovese, while her screams were reportedly ignored by dozens of neighborsthrough the focus of another genre, the personal documentary. Though its nominal director is James Solomon, its main character and virtual auteur is Bill Genovese, one of Kittys three younger brothers, who was sixteen at the time of her murder. His on-camera investigation brings him back to the murder site in Kew Gardens, where he visits apartments, calculates sight lines, and interviews current and former residents about the crime. He also consults trial transcripts and police records and does meta-journalistic research involving reporters, editors, and producers responsible for the original accounts of the murder and later revisions of that story. What he discovers turns out to be at odds with the headlines. Though Bill Genovese keeps his investigation close to the particulars of his sisters killing, he raises questions of wider and present-day import regarding the penal system, police procedure, domestic violence, and journalistic ethics. (The film also offers a moving, novelistically complex vision of gay life in New York a half century ago.) The movies one reƫnactmentan ingenious experiment in forensics and social scienceunites drama, journalism, and first-hand experience in a masterstroke of pure cinema.
