TMI Project presents Voices in Action, the Community Outreach Showcase of 2016, honoring Playwright and Activist Eve Ensler!
On Saturday, September 17th, TMI Project will honor Vagina Monologues playwright and founder of V-Day and One Billion Rising, Eve Ensler, at Voices in Action: Community Outreach Showcase, a fundraiser featuring performances by participants in workshops offered through TMI Projects Community Outreach Initiative. Voices in Action, to be held at 7:30pm in the historic former vaudeville theater at the back of BSP Kingston, will be a performance showcasing storytellers from Community Outreach Initiative workshops that TMI Project has conducted in the past year. The lineup will include women from TMI Project a workshop with Bottomless Closet, a New York City-based organization that helps women moving beyond domestic violence, drug abuse, homelessness, incarceration, and poverty; adults from a workshop at the Mental Health Association of Ulster County; and at-risk teens from a workshop at Hudson Valley Pathways Academy (P-Tech) High School. They will all be performing true monologues that they created in those workshops. At the event, Ensler will be awarded the organizations first annual Voices in Action Award for her groundbreaking, world-changing work with storytelling as activism.
Another reason Ensler is being honored is to acknowledge and thank her for the way in which her brave work deeply inspired TMI Projects. TMI Project is a direct result of my experience with The Vagina Monologues, says TMI Project co-founder and Executive Director. In 2008 and 2009, I had the honor of directing productions of it as fundraisers for a local womens organization. When I was approached again in 2010, I knew many of the women in the cast had their own stories they were dying to tell, and decided to have them share those onstage instead. We worked together to craft our own true stories, leaving in the too much information parts, and then performed them.
That first production of Too Much Information had a huge impact on both the storytellers and audience members. The readers felt transformed by bravely sharing with hundreds of people a story they previously thought theyd never tell one person, Tenuto recalls. Audience members reported sharing their truths with one another on their car rides home. That gave birth to TMI Projects True Storytelling Workshop, culminating in performances.
In 2012, after numerous participants reported feeling transformed by the experience of writing and telling their true stories in the workshops, it seemed only natural for the organization to take the workshop to populations where people dont often get to tell their stories, or be heard. That led to the launching of TMI Projects Community Outreach Initiative. Since then Tenuto and Editorial Director Sari Botton have worked with incarcerated teen boys, survivors of domestic violence, adults with mental illness, at-risk teens, teen moms, military veterans, women living with terminal cancer, people in recovery, the LBGTQ community and many others.
Voices in Action will be held at 7:30pm in the theater at the back of BSP Lounge, a nightclub in the historic Stockade district. There will also be post show reception at 9pm with Eve Ensler, TMI Project staff and the performers, which will include a champagne toast and dessert. Tickets for the show are $25 in advance or $40 at the door. VIP tickets, which include the show and reception, are $75 in advance or $100 at the door.
TMI Project is a non-profit organization founded by Executive Director Eva Tenuto and performer/comic Julie Novak, which offers memoir writing workshops that culminate in performances and/or publication. Through its Community Outreach Initiative, TMI Project brings distinct versions of its workshops to the incarcerated, at-risk teens, cancer patients, survivors of domestic violence, military veterans, LBGTQ teens, and other populations where people dont often get to tell their stories or be heard.
