Intro to Bartitsu, the Victorian Art of Self-Defense
Learn to fight like Sherlock Holmes! A talented amateur boxer, fencer, singlestick player, and of course, master of the mysterious art of baritsu that saved his life, Sherlock Holmes' fighting styles were entirely typical of a 19th-century gentleman's education (and that of a handful of progressive ladies!) Bartitsu (Conan Doyle missed a 't') was all the rage in 1899 London, but only recently has this lost martial art been rediscovered. Learn the Victorian art of self-defense at this special workshop just for members of 221B NYC, presented by the Bartitsu Club of New York City.
No experience necssary! This 2.5 hour workshop will introduce you to Bartitsu, which Conan Doyle famously referred to as "baritsu, or the Japanese system of wrestling." We'll have a short break at the halfway point, and afterwards, those who are interested may retire to Lillie's Irish Victorian pub to continue our Sherlockian adventure over drinks or a bite to eat.
Please wear flat shoes, not high heels, and clothing in which can move freely. Victorian attire welcome (with the caveat that corsets may impede your movement).
Learn the four combative arts of Bartitsu:
Ju Jitsu: Sherlock Holmes defeated Moriarity at Reichenbach Falls in "The Empty House" using this system of "Japanese wrestling"
Pugilism: Holmes' "straight left against a slogging ruffian" sent Mr. Woodley home in a cart in "The Solitary Cyclist" and in The Sign of the Four, his boxing talent was described as good enough to go pro.
Vigny Cane, the Walking Stick Method of Self-Defense: The worst ruffians in the Canon carried lead-filled walking sticks, but they would have been no match for a Bartitsu practioner
Savate: the French style of kickboxing developed by 19th century sailors in Marseille, and the Parisian equivalent to London's Bartitsu classes
Plus parasol self-defense, suffrajitsu, improvised weapons, and more!
This class will be taught by Jesse Barnick, the curriculum guide for the Bartitsu Club of NYC. Jesse began training in the martial arts and sciences when he was eleven years old, and is a student of both classical eastern and western swordsmanship. He has received instructors certifications in several martial arts, and is a committee member of an organization dedicated to the research and promotion of classical Aiki Budo. Jesse is certified in neuromuscular therapy; and was a former teacher of therapeutic massage, anatomy, and kinesiology.
