PATIENT HM
"Patient HM" is based on the true story of "HM," who in 1955 at the age of 27, developed profound amnesia and lost the ability to form new memories as the result of a surgical procedure to treat his severe seizure disorder. In the decades that followed, his case opened the way to study human memory and its disorders. The work done by the scientists who studied HM stands as one of the pillars of modern neuroscience.
Inspired by Patient HM, award winning playwright and psychologist Vanda Wark, explores the question of what it means to have a memory, or conversely what does it mean to not have a memory, through a fictional neuroscientist haunted by her memories as she treats a man who hasn't had a new memory in 55 years. "A touching and complex story of what happens to a man who can no longer remember... Extremely well crafted. Jumping from time to time like fleeting memories it seeks to recreate, the play has the feel of a dream." Byrne Harrison Stagebuzz.com
"It was refreshing to finally see a play that dealt with a person [who] is an essential part of our scientific branch. The production brought to light the complexities of Patient HM and the struggle we ourselves encounter." Dr. Gyorgy Buzsaki Board of Governors Professor Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Rutgers University
