An evening with Zach Jones
Hailing from Portland, Maine, Zach Jones is an artist of exceptional musical talent. With an encyclopedic knowledge of yesterday's music and an awareness and appreciation for today's, Jones's music combines the raw energy and style of the 1960's British pop explosion, from artists such as The Who and The Kinks, with the soulful expression of the American R&B that poured from Motown and Stax. While paying tribute to the music he loves, yet expanding beyond tradition in sound and arrangement, Jones has created a fresh musical melting pot of modern rock, pop, and soul.
"Perhaps most fun is Jones' refusal to settle on one style, wearing Prince's pants on one tune and Paul McCartney's on the next"- Mike Olcott, Portland Press Herald
Jones released the pop/rock albums Fading Flowers in 2010 and Broken Record in 2011. For his latest release Things Were Better, Jones has created a straight-up, retro-soul throwback to the sounds of Motown and Stax. While perfectly emulating the sound and style of 60's soul, Jones has simultaneously managed to create something fresh and new.
"Sure, he's based in Portland, and the CD says the music was recorded in New Hampshire in 2012. But after one listen, you'll swear you've been transported back to Detroit circa 1965. "Things Were Better" is an old-school R&B/soul record that sounds like a lost classic from the glory days of Motown."- Rich Johnson, Portland Press Herald
With Fading Flowers, Zach Jones announced his arrival as a new force of the independent power pop genre. Having previously established himself as a fiery lead guitarist and energetic live performer, on a seemingly endless tour of the United States as lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the pop/rock band AS FAST AS, Jones showed that he is also a skilled craftsman as a songwriter. With Broken Record, Jones continued to push the boundaries of pop music while embracing the integrity of the pre-auto-tuned era. The latest album Things Were Better, is a musical look back, but Jones continues to look forward toward whatever's next.
