Cooking with seasonal produce from Whittier Backyard Farms and other local growers, we celebrate summer this week with spicy tacos and cool cucumber soup. Not only that, we're also test-driving a brand new recipe for lime meringue pie! Check out this week's menu:
- Mango, Jicama, and Watermelon Picante (A classic fruit salad that's perfect for summer weather)
- Cool Cucumber Soup with Cilantro Cream (A beautifully balanced soup with sweet, salty, tangy, and umami flavors)
- Spicy Tacos with Grilled Squash and Creamed Kale (Served with black beans, fried chilis, and cashew sour cream)
- Lime Meringue Pie (Almond crust, lime filling, and eggless meringue*)
*for gluten free option, request pie without meringue

Spicy is good for you! Chili peppers -- including the cayenne sprinkled on our fruit salad this week -- can fight migraine headaches and sinus headache, prevent sinusitis, relieve congestion, fight cancer, help lower blood pressure, fight inflammation, and help soothe intestinal diseases (no, really!).
Chili peppers also can help you burn fat and lose weight. (Did you know that salsa and hot sauce have negative calories?) Peppers also help protect your heart, are chock full of vitamin C, and help with circulation.
Go to ChiliPepperMadness.com to read interviews with medical professionals about the health benefits of chili peppers.

How We Shop
Local, organic, vegan: The primary produce supplier for the Tuesday Dinners is Whittier Backyard Farms, a small start-up farm group in Whittier, CA. Their farming methods are what's known as "beyond organic" -- they create their own compost (including kitchen scraps from the Tuesday Dinners), procure mulch and chicken manure from other urban farms, and sow only heirloom seeds -- chemicals aren't even in the discussion. We're pretty pleased to support them, and to serve you their excellent produce!
This week's menu includes kale, chard, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, limes, and lemons from Whittier Backyard Farms. (And thank you Fred Portillo for backyard chili peppers!) You too can invest in their farm and receive a weekly box of produce: info@whittierbackyardfarms.com.
Retailers we buy from in order of frequency: Herbie's Natural Foods in Whittier, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Figueroa Produce. Culturally specific ingredients come from ethnic markets. Wild ingredients are harvested by hand, by us. We've also heard a rumor that Whittier Backyard Farms has some seed starts for wild foods...we'll keep you posted!
