Juan Felipe Herrera Tickets Will Be Available at the Door
US Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera reads his poetry and talks about his work as a poet, performance artist, and activist. Opening for Mr. Herrera will be Electropoetic Coffee, the poetry and music duo. The reading will begin at 7:30 pm, and there is also a reception for Mr. Herrera beginning at 6 pm. Tickets are $15. The Crest Theater is at 1013 K STreet, Sacramento. This event is sponsored by the Sacramento Poetry Center (SPC) and the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. Juan Felipe Herrera is the 21st Poet Laureate of the United States and is the first Latino to hold the position. Herreras many poetry collections include Half of the World in Light: New and Selected Poems, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award; and 187 Reasons Mexicanos Cant Cross the Border: Undocuments 1971-2007.
Herrera has written many children's books, and is also the author of Crashboomlove: A Novel in Verse, which received the Americas Award. Besides his work as a poet and performance artist, Mr. Herrera is known for his political activism, and he works on behalf of migrant and indigenous communities, and at-risk youth.
