Battlehooch + Sun Angle + Bitch'n
Doors 730 Show 8 All Ages
San Franciscos Battlehooch defies the calculus of sound. By cross-pollinating elements of psychedelia with modern pop, the six piece have given birth to a mutant strain of kaleidoscopic rock and roll. Hot on the heels of 2013s Hot Lungs LP, comes their new EP, Wink. Wink is both an homage to the great tripped out albums of the past (with nods to greats like Syd Barrett, Lee Scratch Perry and Os Mutantes) and a contribution to the current revival of psychedelic indie pop (i.e. Tame impala, Thee Oh Sees, Foxygen, etc.). While Wink is awash in vivid sounds and sumptuous textures, it is never at the expense of the songwriting. Instead, the myriad of aural colors exist only to enrich the harmonic and melodic details of the songs. The combined effect results in a collection of songs that are immediately inviting and pleasing, while still managing to go in exciting new directions you never expected! Battlehooch will be returning to the road to support Wink in early 2015 with dates on both the east and west coast. Previously the band has held opening slots for Of Montreal, Crystal Castles, The Danielson Family, Ponytail, Nomo, Gza (from Wu-tang Clan,) and Cherub. They have also had their track featured in a national TV ad for Go Pro Cameras that showed during the Olympics and Monday night Football.
GO EXPLORING: When youre living in a musical hotbed as dense as Portland, Oregon, collaboration is kind of a no-brainer. Over the course of the past decade, Charlie Salas Humara, Marius Libman, and Papi Fimbres have lent their talents to all sorts of Portland-area bands, ranging from smaller acts (like Humaras disco-funk duo Panther) to full bands (à la Fimbres electro-tropical Paper/Upper/Cuts). Most recently, though, the three men have joined forces to form the experimental group Sun Angle. The band is a kinetic and complex blend of its individual players, part prog rock, part tropical punk, part psychedelic jazz fusion.
What happens when you combine the female forces behind projects such as Duover, Orquestra Pacifico Tropical, Point Juncture WA, Ioa, Great Wilderness, and Sallie Ford? This is where Bitch'n brews. The fresh, all-woman punk-meets-pop five-piece came together in spring 2015, recording epic free jams that they later wrote lyrics over. Including Rebecca Rasmussen, Amanda Spring, Emily Overstreet, Nefertiti Porter, and Shana Lindbeck. Bitch'n is equal parts Fugazi and Tom Tom Club, with the playfulness of Dirty Projectors and Hot Chip, keeping it bumpin' with catchy songs accented by dark bass, psych-pop guitars and keys, driving drum beats, and all five women's voices singing and sometimes shouting in unison. Experimental in nature, Bitch'n expertly weave a tapestry through their songs, keeping the project from falling into a single box, while simultaneously following a cohesive thread. - PORTLAND MERCURY
