Friendship, love, and compassion were the driving forces behind Ein Deutsches Requiem, a work Brahms developed over the course of a decade, following the loss of Robert Schumann, his friend and champion.
Within the traditional Requiem format of soloists, chorus and orchestra, Brahms replaced the ancient Latin Mass for the Dead with texts from Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible, resulting in a piece of contemporary art with a much more universal Humanist message of comfort. Rather than the more usual dogmatic focus on the fate of those who have died, Brahms' Requiem focuses on comforting the souls who remain on Earth and, through music and poetry, transforms grief into joy.
