Improv Workshop
Plaza Playhouse Theater Opens Two Improv Workshops Improv has been gaining popularity across the country, most recently highlighted in the movie "Don't Think Twice" starring Keegan-Michael Key. As part of this movement, the Plaza Playhouse Theater in Carpinteria is hosting two Improv Workshops, including for those who want to join in these unrehearsed, unscripted scenes, games and activities and one specifically for beginners.
Now in its fifth year, the ongoing workshop is held on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 starting September 6 and running through October 25. For those who are just getting their feet wet and want to learn the basics of Improv, a Beginners Course has just been opened up and will run for eight weeks on Saturdays from 10 to noon starting September 10 and running through October 29. Past participants in the class are quite willing to share the many ways Improv has benefited them:
"Improv gave me my sanity back."
"The skills I learned at the Plaza Improv workshop apply to all aspects of my life -- thinking on my feet at the office, accepting all offers and making my partner look good".
"Infusing Improv is the concept of 'yes and...', that is, the notion of accepting whatever suggestion or idea is offered. This concept is such a positive antidote to living in a hyper-critical world." said Diane Wondolowski.
Hope Zweig added "Teamwork is at the heart of Improv with one of the key rules being to always make your partner look good." Others enjoy the class for existential reasons "Remember when you would go out and play as a child, and you could be whoever you wanted to be...for a little while? During the Improv Workshop, I regain that sense of play, taking on whatever character I feel like in the moment."
Director, Tom Mueller shares that Improv supports active listening skills, spontaneity, as well as the ability to be in the moment.
Registration for either class is $100 and can be done online at or by sending a check made out to Plaza Playhouse Theater to Improv workshop, c/o Plaza Playhouse Theater, 4916 Carpinteria Ave., Carpinteria, CA 93013. Classes are limited to twenty participants each.
