Have you ever tasted seaweed, beach plums, cactus or sea herbs? September calls for the exhilaration of foraging along the coast.

Tamas co-host will be Scott Barnes, expert on the flora and fauna of Sandy Hook, leading All Things Birds tours for New Jersey Audubon (http://www.njaudubon.org/SectionEducation/Welcome.aspx), an organization which  promotes preservation of New Jersey's valuable natural habitats, throughout the year.  We will learn about the seashore and the special plant communities that grow in, near and out of the water, loving sand and salt. Tama and chef Joe Yardley will introduce us to the difference between just plain 'salty' and the full flavors of brine and minerals.

The trip includes a delightful beach picnic, which incorporates some of our foraged beach plants and seaweeds.

ABOUT THE FORAGER

Tama Matsuoka Wong lives with her husband and their three daughters on 28 acres of land in Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
After more than 25 years as a financial-services lawyer in Tokyo, New York and Hong Kong, she and her family moved back to New Jersey. To help alleviate her daughters allergies, Tama wanted to start growing their own food. Gardening proved to be a challenge though, as invasive plants were taking over the land.

Tama was on a quest to eradicate the invasive plants until a house guest mentioned that the weeds were edible.
This inspired her to explore and research the world of native plants, which has grown into a passion for sourcing wild flavors for restaurants. Through her work, Tama connects experts in the fields of meadow restoration, botany, and wildlife with people in the community, and introduces a greater appreciation and understanding of the abundance and potential of plants that grow wild. For more information, see her website meadowsandmore.com.
