MONUMENT is a dynamic new dance exploring the historical legacy of legendary choreographer Ted Shawn through a contemporary lens. The genesis for MONUMENT came out of Weinerts 2014 residency at the Hudson Opera House where he explored Shawns early work. He invited composer Chris Garneau, whose compositions often begin as an exercise in memory, to collaborate with him as he investigated this early branch of dance history. Within the walls of the Opera Houses historic and decayed theater, they began to develop a new work that spoke to early 20th century choreography by Shawn, Doris Humphrey, and José Limón. MONUMENT premieres at Jacobs Pillow this summer, where Weinert and an ensemble of stunning dancers perform a program of historic solos and duets some of which have not been seen in nearly fifty years before transporting audiences to a new world of contemporary choreography that is fleeting, mysterious and wholly alive (Gia Kourlas, The New York Times).
