The House of the Siberian Seasons
One boy's journey to a land which will shape his destiny. A plentiful land of berries and wild rosemary growing on the slopes above Lake Baikal.
Vibrant, magical and charming, this first ever staging of Leonid Borodin's novel by the ExploreTheArch collective is timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Moscow coup that led to the end of censorship for Russian writers with the transformation of the USSR into new countries. With original composition, musicians and actors will lead you through this coming of age story.
The production evokes the Siberian landscape and seasons through the innovative use of puppets crafted from ribbons of text and giant pages. The theme of entrapment, prevalent in so many hidden books from 70s and 80s Soviet Russia, is present in the discovery of a legend which grips the boy and gradually destroys his peace of mind.
The first version of the book was snatched from Borodin in prison and the novel was rewritten in a mountain hut in the Siberian wilderness when Borodin was released. When he was imprisoned for a second time, it was smuggled to Frankfurt for publishing as were many other hidden books that Soviet censors had suppressed.
The production reflects on the book's provenance in the foyer space designed to evoke Borodin's mountain hut. You can rummage through pages detailing his thoughts and fragments of later speeches (he won the Solzhenitsyn prize in 2002). Immerse yourself not only in Borodin's remarkable little book and also the story that accompanies it.
Staged over two floors of ExploreTheArch's favourite space, a late Victorian Villa, the production is a vivid way to get to know this novel. Step into this book.
