People's Champs and Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang at Tropicalia
Doors 8PM $12 advance // $15 at the door
Sierra Leonean singer Janka Nabay exclaims:"All I am about is making history," a modest goal for someone who revived a fading musical treasure, made it big back home, escaped war and chaos, and still managed to write and play songs while working at American fast-food fryers. Now, at last, Nabay hits his stride with Brooklyn indie experimenters-turned-acolytes The Bubu Gang (with members of Les Rhinocéros, Cheick Hamala Diabate, Arto Lindsay, Brazzaville, Teen, Reina Terror)
Combining dance rhythms from West Africa and South America with retro-futurist synth tones, People's Champs' original sound is equal parts Sharon Jones, tUnE-yArDs, Os Mutantes, William Onyeabor, and Prince. With feet placed equally in Brooklyns thriving indie rock community and its funk & soul scene, bandleader Alex Asher founded Peoples Champs inspired by the idea that music is for everyone: They creatively deliver a unique blend of powerful lyrics and danceable rhythms that relate to people from all walks of life.
