Weaving Words - A workshop by Bloedel Reserve's Artist in Residence Susan Pavel
Join Bloedel Reserve's Artist in Residence Susan Pavel as she demonstrates and shares her knowledge of and stories from Coast Salish Weaving. Pavel will share various teachings from plants and animals, her personal philosophy as a weaver, and the unique aspects of the Coast Salish weave style.
This kind of sharing will set the stage for others to share their story. Just as each plant is unique in its contribution (grasses, shrubs, trees, etc) each person's story is unique, and it is the weaving of our stories that create the beautiful fabric of our lives. We start out as individuals and by sharing our story with each other we are woven together through laughter, joy, pain, and sorrow. It is by sharing these stories with each other that we are woven together as a group and community. We are stronger as a people woven together for a singular mission and Weaving Words provides that experience sitting at a traditional loom within a circle of people.
The nature and meaning of Weaving Words draws upon Indigenous teachings of the plant and animal people and first emerged during the 6th installation of SQ3Tsyayay: Weavers Spirit Power 2012 at the Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Born from a place of love and community the intention of Weaving Words is to bring the blanket loom to a gathering and invite participants to weave a weft of yarn and share a story beckoning to be told.
