THE LION IN WINTER by James Goldman
King Henry II has a problem to resolve. Who will inherit the throne upon his death? Though set in 1183 in a castle in Chinon, France, modern audiences will have no trouble recognizing this familys universal issues: siblings fighting for parental love and attention, warring spouses living dependent but separate lives, jealousy and adulterous affairs, angst over sexual relationships and, always, betrayal. Except in this case, this family will determine the very future of England (and France).
Goldmans anachronistic, heightened language with its fast, furious and biting wit allows us to witness and enjoy the royal family at its feral best. The cruelty with which these family members wage war with one another has echoes in our own struggles with power and ambition, whether personal or political.
