More about Martha L. Healy
Martha was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised on a diet of The Eagles, The Traveling Wilburys and Bruce Springsteen, staples her of fathers vinyl collection. At the same time she was exploring her love for female artists like Sheryl Crow, Carol King, Dolly Parton and Bonnie Raitt and picked up the guitar to start writing her own songs.
Her debut album, Better Days, was produced in Nashville by David Spicher in 2014 and featured some of Music City's most enviable musicians - some of them currently on the road with Kasey Musgraves, Ashley Munro and Alison Krauss. The album gained extensive radio play in the UK, including Another Country with Ricky Ross, Iain Anderson Show, Tom Morton Show, Highland Radio and on BBC Radio Ulster. Across the pond, in America and Canada, Marthas been featured regularly on The International Americana Show & Blues & Roots Radio.
For her current project, Martha was eager to replicate the live experience she first tasted at the infamous Sun Studio in 2013, with the Grammy-award winning producer/engineer, Matt Ross-Spang. This time, instead of taking the streetcar down Main Street, she took the M77 into Glasgow and recorded an EP, entitled To Be Free, with Johnny Smilie at La Chunky Studio.
The EP was recorded over a snowy weekend with her band and the result is a mix of new original tracks and several of Marthas favourite country songs of all time. They showcase Marthas impeccable live voice and old-time retro sound.
To Be Free will be released at The Rum Shack on Thursday 25th August.
Martin Jones is a singer songwriter from Greenock who writes songs in English and Spanish. His music ranges from country to folk to blues and soul. He draws on influences such as Eric Bibb, Billy Joe Shaver and Raul Malo. Martin was a friend of the late Danny Kyle who encouraged him to perform at his open stages around the country at various folk festivals. He still appears frequently at the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections.
In 2008, he reached the final of the inaugural Billy Kelly songwriting award and was also a finalist in the Sweeneys on the Park songwriting competition a few years ago. He has supported Kim Richey, Old Man Luedecke, Jenn Butterworth and Laura Beth Salter, Declan ORourke and Gaberlunzie to name a few and he is a frequent headliner at Glasgows annual Lentfest festival. Martins great uncles and aunt were performers in the Scottish variety and music hall scene and this can be reflected in his music and songwriting.
