Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
San Francisco, CA Comedy Returns to El Rio! is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig and El Rio. The show, now in its 8th year, takes place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District and showcases an eclectic mix of intelligent, progressive comedians from the Bay Area and beyond.
This month features: Abhay Nakarni (GUEST HOST), Maureen Langan, Julia Jackson, David Lawrence Hawkins, and Lisa Geduldig.
Abhay Nakarni moved from South-India to South Central Los Angeles for grad school. "But why?" would be an obvious reaction. Maybe he had a death wish or maybe he wanted to see if Training Day was legit or maybe USC was the only school willing to give him an education. Dodging bullets en-route to grad school armed him with plenty of stories and stand up was his only catharsis for combating culture shock. His act is an eclectic mix of his experience as an immigrant in the US. He recently performed at the Ventura and SAC Comedy Festivals 2014. He was also featured in the best of the fest showcase at the Burbank Comedy Festival-2014. in 2015 he was selected to be a part of SF Sketchfest Comedy Festival and the San Diego Comedy Festival. He runs The Setup, a weekly comedy show in SF voted one of the best shows to watch by Thrillist. He is the co-producer of The 5th Annual Desi Comedy Fest, which will take place in 9 Northern California cities in August. www.comedianabhay.com
Maureen Langan performs at clubs, theaters, and festivals in the U.S, Canada, Europe, and South Africa. She has opened for Joy Behar, Steven Wright, Dennis Miller, and performed on Broadway with Rosie ODonnell. Carolines on Broadway in NYC is her home club. Maureen has appeared on Gotham Live, HBO, Red Eye, Comics Unleashed, Cozi TV, FOX, CBS, HLN, in the film Marci X, and in many national commercials. She hosts Hangin with Langan, a live, three-hour talk show on San Franciscos premier radio station KGO. Maureen will be making her solo show debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August with her one-woman show, Daughter of a Garbage Man. She will preview excerpts from the show at El Rio. Comedian and actor, Jerry Stiller, says: Maureen is to comedy what James Brown was to soul. www.MaureenLangan.com
Julia Jackson grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father came from Harlem, and her mother came from a dairy farm in Whitewater, Wisconsin. She says, How could I not be funny with that pedigree? You laugh or you cry, folks. I chose humor. I wound up in the only place that would take me: San Francisco. Its actually home to the Intelligent Female Relocation Program. Her solo show, Children are Forever (All Sales Final), about the trials and tribulations of adopting a baby had a successful run at Stagewerx in SF and won the "Best Non-Fiction Script Award" at United Solo. She is a regular guest on the Brian Copeland Show on KGO Radio on Fridays 3-4pm. www.juliajackson.com
David Lawrence Hawkins has been performing stand up for 8 years appearing at venues such as the SF Punchline, The Comedy Store, and the National Queer Arts Festival. He is also an artist whose paintings will be on display at the Glamarama Salon in San Francisco for a month beginning Easter weekend. You can read all about his adventures as an avid thriftshopper in his Tumblr blog Gimme Thrift! gimmethrift.tumblr.com He has recently started using his middle name again because it makes him feel smarter.
