Comedy Returns to El Rio! (Mon, July 9)
Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Presents... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Now in its 4th year, this popular monthly (every 2nd Monday of the month) comedy show features the best of Bay Area comedians and beyond. The show takes place at El Rio in The Mission District as that is where San Francisco comedian and comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy, Funny Girlz), began her stand up comedy career 23 years ago.
Geduldig strives to produce diverse, inclusive comedy shows with the variety of shows she produces throughout the year.
The July 9th El Rio features: Joe Klocek, Josh Healey, Regina Stoops, Johan Miranda, Shanti Charan, and Lisa Geduldi.g
Josh Healey is an award-winning writer, organizer, and comedic powerhouse. A cultural activist, he has shared stages and picket lines with Amiri Baraka, Naomi Klein, and Flavor Flav (before the reality show). Healey has been featured in the New York Times, Al-Jazeera, and is a regular performer on NPR's Snap Judgment. He has performed his work at UC Berkeley, Harvard, the National Poetry Slam, the Wisconsin Book Festival, the Queer Cultural Center, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Arab Cultural Center, and grimy house parties from coast to coast. www.joshhealey.org
Joe Klocek is a square peg in a round hole sort of guy. Raised a Mid-Westerner, so he has manners, but living in San Francisco for 20 years, so he thinks he's better than you. Joe does two things great: tells stories and talks to the crowd. Joe has appeared on Comedy Central's, "Live at Gotham," "Last Comic Standing," was a commentator for Emmy award-winning documentary "A Bridge so Far," and co-creator of the critically-acclaimed storytelling show, "Previously Secret Information." Joe has also been the runner-up in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition and the Seattle Comedy Competition. He has performed at every major comedy club in the country, including Alaska and is a regular on the Bay Area comedy scene. www.standupjoe.com
Regina Stoops was born and raised in a town called Normal though her humor is anything but. Regina has her own unique perspective on what most might consider the mundane details of ordinary life: raising children, being married (or not), aging parents, health care, special education, mini-van motoring and the grocery store. A regular performer in the Bay Area, Regina took a hiatus from comedy to help raise three kids (what were they thinking?). The life of a lesbian stay-at home mom in the world of suburban soccer moms has provided endless entertainment along the way. She is thrilled to be back on stage to perform for an audience that is potty trained.
Shanti Charan has established herself on the San Francisco Bay Area comedy circuit in her first two years of comedy. She has conquered a few comedy competitions and won 1st Place in the 2011 Annual Rooster T. Feather's Comedy Competition. She went on to participate in the 2011 San Francisco International Comedy Competition, advanced to the semi-finals and placed 7th. Her success in the San Francisco competition got her an invitation to participate in the 2011 Seattle International Comedy Competition. Shanti's bubbly personality and contagious smile lure in audiences and her comedic abilities keeps them laughing.
Johan Miranda, who began his comedy debut in 2010, has performed all around the Bay Area. Inspired by the likes of Dave Chappell, Chris Rock, and Louis C.K., the Peruvian-born comic quips playfully about everyday life from timely MySpace jokes to his perpetual fear of spiders. Johan has performed at LA's Comedy Store, the San Jose Improv, 142 Throckmorton Theatre, and the Purple Onion, He placed 2nd in San Francisco's Walk the Plank competition and was awarded a sponsored submission to the 2012 Arizona Comedy Festival.
Lisa Geduldig is the creator, producer, & MC of a variety of annual comedy shows: Kung Pao Kosher Comedy: Jewish comedy in Christmas in a Chinese Restaurant (now in its 20th year); The George Bush Going Away Party; Funny Girlz; A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar; The Color of Funny; Cafe con Comedy; Charo... She is also a bilingual (Spanish-English) arts publicist and budding filmmaker.
Must be over 21 as it's a bar. Tickets on sale on a sliding scale basis: $7 to $20.
