Development of Volvo Cars US Operations John Culbreath, PE Thomas & Hutton Regional Director
PROGRAM SUMMARY: On Septmember 25, 2015, Volvo Car USA LLC's President and CEO Lex Kerssemakers, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and other key public officials broke ground on Volvo Cars' first American factory in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Construction has now begun on the factory site, which will be capable of producing up to 100,000 cars per year. "Today's groundbreaking proves that Volvo Car USA follows promises with action," said Lex Kerssemakers, "Volvo is moving quickly to expand its presence in the United States with new cars, new engines and now, a new factory."
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Attendees will understand the "Communication Lessons" learned in bringing all the different players together to not only secure Volvo for South Carolina, but also to satisfy the development schedule for the property and manufacturing facilities.
With all the various state and federal agencies approval processes for the total project, attendees will gain a thorough understanding of the Wetlands Permitting and Mitigation approval process.
With the site being in an undeveloped area of Berkeley County, attendees will understand the overall infrastructure needed to build a village in which to build the factory.
Protecting and restoring the quality of all Waters of the State has, essentially, become the foundation of how and why to implement a set of practices under a site-specific stormwater management plan. Attendees will understand the stormwater design for the Plantation Pine Development and its South Carolina approval process.
