About the show: REBATEnsemble presents an original staging of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Inspired by the recent Syrian-refugee crisis, the ISIL agenda of imperialistic violence, and ongoing racism and domestic aggression towards minority cultures in the US; our mounting of "The Tempest" brings to the forefront a darker side of Shakespeare's popular comedy. This production refocuses the classic by highlighting themes of vengeance, sacrifice and cultural domination to present our audiences with a picture of imperialistic violence and the consequences of cultural oppression. This production is also inspired by music, dances and images of cultures all around the world.
Who are we: REBATEnsemble (Recession-Era Broke-Ass Theatre Ensemble) started in 2011 as a UW student-led alternative to costly theatre in expensive venues. Bringing our unconventional approach to everything we do, weve done shows in theatres, cafes, parks and teahouses. Our cast and crew have always played an integral part in crafting our scripts and the actors contributions have led to some of our best works. Since then, weve grown and refined our craft, our members having gone on to other positions in the theatre industry (a few have even become film and TV actors in Hollywood) but REBATEnsemble remains a passion project, largely due to our unique approach to theatre. As we look to the future, well continue blending forms, shattering the fourth wall and playing with fire.
