Talks on Tyne: Crossing the Tyne - Ken Smith
Newcastle Castle, in association with Tyne Bridge Publishing (Newcastle Libraries publishing arm), present Talks on Tyne, a series of six talks taking place 27 July 31 August in the Black Gate.
Author of over 30 books on the industry and heritage of the Tyne, Ken Smith turns his attention to its bridges. He will look at the medieval and Roman bridges, the latter of which is believed to have belonged to the original defensive fortification upon the Tyne: Pons Aelius (which can be translated to mean `the Bridge of Hadrian').
The talk will journey forward to examine the place where you could row across and pay the ferryman all the way through to the Tyne Tunnel and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.
