Talks on Tyne: The Battle of Otterburn - John Sadler
Newcastle Castle, in association with Tyne Bridge Publishing (Newcastle Libraries publishing arm), present Talks on Tyne, a series of six talks taking place 27 July 31 August in the Black Gate.
John Sadler will give a talk on the Battle of Otterburn, one of the most dramatic incidents in the three-hundred-year Border Wars between England & Scotland.
According to legend, Henry Percy (Hotspur) and James Black Douglas jousted outside the timber outwork or barrier just in front of the Black Gate, triggering the moonlit battle some days later. Douglas died and Percy was captured; the Scots were ably led by the wily Earl of March who later defected and guided Hotspur to his only triumph at Homildon. The Earl shifted sides yet again and advised Henry IV at Shrewsbury where Hotspur made his final stand.
The Battle of Otterburn is much celebrated in border ballads of which well have some live readings.
