The Minor Key Concert Series at The Old Church was created to showcase the best singer-songwriters this world has to offer. Genres will range, but the stories will linger. Set in Portlands oldest still standing church, you will find yourself set in one of the most intimate venues around.
J.D. Wilkes, front man of Th'Legendary Shack Shakers, is an American musician, visual artist, author, filmmakers and self-proclaimed southern surrealist. Wilkes is a Kentucky Colonel, an honorable title bestowed upon those with a connection to, or are famous residents of Kentucky, by the state's Governor.Known as an accomplished harmonica and banjo player, his back to basics style will bring a new essence to your ears.
The term renaissance man is one that isnt utilized a whole lot these days. In the case ofColonel J.D. Wilkes, the term fits like a glove. Wilkes has been the enigmatic front-man for theLegendary Shack Shakers, a high-energy amalgam of blues, gypsy, twang, and just about anything else that they can fit in, for going on twenty years now. n the mid 90s. The band rose to prominence when their C.B. Song was featured in a long-running Geico commercial. After signing with Bloodshot Records, the band toured nationally and internationally with acts like The Black Keys and Robert Plant.In the last two years, Wiilkes has continued to develop his solo projects, having toured with Charlie Parr and The Tillers, as well as performing at the 2015 Winnipeg Folk Festival.
Aside from his prolific career in music, Wilkes is also a published writer, Wilkes' contributions to visual art include many sideshow banners and comic strips. His "Head Cheese" strip was seen in the Nashville RAGE (Metromix) weekly from 2005-2008. Other works by Wilkes have been seen in Juxtapoz, Snicker, U. Magazine, ALARM Magazine, Twisted South and TopShelfComix.com. Wilkes illustrated the book Spookiest Stories Ever for the University Press of Kentucky, released in 2010. In 2011 he released Grim Hymns, a comic hymnal/graphic novel featuring some of his work for TopShelf. In 2013, he completed work on another comic book that accompanies Shooter Jennings album The Other Life.
