Jarabe Mexicano
Jarabe Mexicano has burst onto the World Music scene with a commitment to honoring the past while embracing the future. True to their name which means Mexican Syrup, Jarabe Mexicano performs a mixture of traditional as well as popular genres that appeal to audiences of all ages. While their renditions of Rancheras, Huapangos, Sones, and Boleros fill their listeners with nostalgia, their spirited arrangements of Cumbia, Reggae, and Rock & Roll frequently bring people to their feet.
Touring Mexico and the U.S. this summer under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State, Jarabe Mexicano takes its name from the Spanish reference to traditional forms of mariachi music. The ensemble incorporates the diversity of their backgrounds and musical training into a vast Latin repertoire. The dynamic energy and festive nostalgia of this musical fusion appeals to wide audiences, from children to adults dancing along with their compelling musical rhythms.
This five-man group features the talents of lead vocalist Gustavo Alcoser, band leader Mario Equia on requinto (a small guitar), Kevin Lomez on vijuela (a guitar-shaped instrument associated with mariachi music), bassist Oskar Beckmann, and percussionist Alex Tapia.
