Left Among Us
Left Among Us is a story told, documentary style, of Deborah Cain, a social worker from Deerfield Kansas, who last year became the first American to go to prison for the crime of being left handed! Thats the premise of Lawrence Hennessys fictional satire. A satire which tells a story of what might happen if a small town board of selectmen, consisting of an evangelical preacher, a power hungry politician, an alcoholic sheriff, and a grandiose political consultant, all got together to try to make their small corner of the world the most conservative place in America With election season rising to a fever pitch, Left Among Us offers a timely reminder of just how crazy the democratic process can get, and if it all starts to feel too real, just keep reminding yourself that, Nothing like this could ever happen here!" The target of the antagonists ambition is left handed people, although virtually any minority might do. Posing the question, Why cant we just train them to be normal?, the movement starts to gain momentum and eventually is picked up on the internet. Ultimately the case against Ms. Cain makes it all the way to the Supreme Court with many unpredictable twists along the way. This is the third time Hennessy has teamed up with veteran TASN director David Houlden, who most recently directed Hennessys Acceptance. Both Houlden and Hennessy are frequent contributors to the Weekend Writers Group, one of the many theater related organizations operating out of the Actors Studio location at the Tannery Mall in Newburyport. The two first paired up on Hennessys 96 Tears with Houlden playing the part of the troubled psychiatrist Dr. Wilton Paris.
