Minneapolis Musical Theatre is dedicated to Rare Musicals, Well Done. Songs for a New World fits this description well. The show is not a traditional musical that follows a single story with a set of characters. Instead, the four actors play different roles throughout this sung-through song cycle musical. The songs are connected by a central theme: the moment of decision. Before celebrated musical theater composer Jason Robert Brown wrote The Last Five Years and The Bridges of Madison County, he wrote Songs for a New World. As his first full production, the show features the hallmarks of his work, including complicated rhythms, challenging harmonies, unconventional song structures and various styles of music.
