Shawn Thwaites Rebel Quartet
O.C.A. presents a unique musical offering on Saturday July 23, 2016 at 8 pm: Shawn Thwaites Rebel Quartet. Shawn Thwaites is a reputable and versatile Trinidadian-American steelpan musician and educator from Washington, D.C. His trademark style integrates his Trinidadian ancestry and his D.C. upbringing, intertwining jazz, hip-hop, funk, calypso, reggae and more. Also an alumni of the Berklee School of Music, Shawn has performed with several steel orchestras in prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center , as well as toured world wide with notable artists such as Lauryn Hill, Walter Beasley, and Greg Philliganes. He has travelled five continents with the Muslim hip-hop group Native Deen, as he puts it: spreading the positive message that all Muslims are not radicals. A passionate music educator , Shawn formed the Pan United Youth Movement steel drum youth orchestra in collaboration with The Boys and Girls Club of Martinsville, Virginia. His daughter Kamari is the youngest member. Shawn Thwaites formed the STRQ in 2015. This dynamic and eclectic ensemble of talented musicians, with the steeldrum born out of the colonial history of Trinidad at the helm, attempts to fuse intricate works of Caribbean, African, American and European composers into a worldly mix. Bringing together elements of jazz, R & B, hip hop, Afro-beat, and Calypso, STRQ pushes the limits of innovation while remaining loyal to authentic world sounds. www.strq.tv.
