En Evening with Smiling Jack And Tim Williams
40 Year Later .. Two old friends, songwriters, guitarists, singers and storytellers unite onstage at the historic WISE Hall on July 24th at 7:30pm. Featuring your Master of Ceremonies Davy Longworth, The Cowboy Poet.
Smiling Jack has been writing and singing his songs in a career that spans five decades and three continents from New York City to Vancouver, from Florida to New Jersey, from Madrid to Australia, from London to Hamburg.
His music has changed and evolved with the times and the places he has seen and lived: folk songs with The Smith Brothers in New York (with lead guitar Stan Jay), folk-rock in Vancouver (with players like Joe Mock, Pat Coleman, Ed Patterson and Robbie King), country in Florida (with T.C. Carr on harmonica) and blues in Europe and Australia (with David Gwynn, Antonio Serrano and Jim Finn).
On street corners, at arts and craft faires, in concert halls and bars, and more recently in house concerts (especially in Kiel, Germany) the audiences have been warm and responsive, giving Jack a place in their hearts and minds.
His recordings, ranging from the Ahh Capella CD with Party Fever in Vancouver through This Blue Before (produced by Pat Coleman with an all star cast of Canadian musicians) to the acclaimed acoustic project Now That Truth Was Gone with David Gwynn, have been played all over the world.
Jack has just released a new CD, Simple Pleasure, again working with David Gwynn. It is the logical succesor to their last CD, an eclectic mix of many different blues styles and topics following along the path that led him to be called "Spain's blues poet" by Vicente Zumel from La Hora del Blues. www.smilingjacksmith.com
Tim Williams left Southern California in the autumn of 1970, headed for Toronto, but was taken by Vancouvers beauty and rich arts scene and made a seven year detour. Already a seasoned studio musician, he found steady work as a guitarist, banjo and dobro player, and harmonicist in the citys recording scene. A teacher at Mediterranean Guitars in Gastown, Tim also played the clubs. Long gone but familiar places like The Old Cellar, The Classical Joint, Le Chat Noir, The Gastown Saloon, and more. Later, he would appear frequently as opening act at The Egress, The Nucleus, and The Old Roller Rink, plus opening for Taj Mahal at the QE Theatre and Billy Joel at the PNE Gardens. After a several year hiatus to work as a ranch hand and horse wrangler, Tim returned to performing with a vengeance, and has toured much of the world (Canada, the United States, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, Morocco, Italy, Slovenia, Mexico and Cuba). He was the Solo/Duo winner at the 2014 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN (also winning Best Guitarist, Solo/Duo), and his latest cd So Low (Lowden Proud Records) has received global airplay and acclaim including rising to the #2 position on the Roots Music Report for Canada (#9 in the U.S. and number 30 world-wide). Playing close to 200 shows a year on guitar, slide guitar, mandolin and more, and performing a mix of pre-war blues plus originals praised by the likes of Tom Russel and Willie Nelson, Tim is a crowd-pleaser wherever he goes. Tim has performed with : B.B. King Dr. John ZZ Top Bonnie Raitt Maria Muldaur Honeyboy Edwards Robert Lockwood Jr. Lightning Hopkins And many, many more. Tim Williams is a national treasure in Canada, and a bluesman of the highest order. Blues In Britain Magazine www.cayusemusic.com
