KAREN FOWLIE - FREE CONCERT June 25
Karen Fowlie and Friends give a free concert on Saturday June 25 8-10pm at Hugos restaurant.

BIOGRAPHY After Karen Fowlie completed degrees in Psychology and Sociology she landed a job at an Insurance brokerage, developing a career as a (gasp!) commercial lines agent. However, at age 27, the call to create and perform music had gone unanswered. A turning point, Karen quit her insurance career and started anew amid a tornado of flying musical notes and guitar strings.
Karen began to write catchy tunes and perform live. She teamed up with John Lefebvre, forming a band called, French Kiss the Fortune Teller, and released a self-titled album after gigging extensively around Calgary. After French Kiss the Fortune Teller, she went to the Royal Conservatory in Calgary to study guitar and theory. She joined the Bach choir and then the Philharmonic chorus. She worked on her vocal pitch all the while slaking her musical thirst in classics.
Soon after came a move to Vancouver and Karens first solo album. With Dale Penner (Matthew Good Band, Nickelback) producing, Pushing the Edge was released in 2007, with Karens classical roots evident in many of the string arrangements.
Today Karen can be seen performing solo or under the banner of Fowlie and Friends, a Pop/Rock group that has also spawned a variety show. Comedy writer Clive Scarff approached Karen with the idea of a weekly live show comprised of her musical talents, and comedy skits, loosely reminiscent of Carol Burnett era fare. The first Karen Fowlie & Friends Variety Show (Episode:Love) featured a cast of 14 performers with three of four shows staged in February being sold out, and more shows are on the horizon.
Karen performs live locally frequently, and has been the emcee for the Merritt Summer of Music Festival, and West Vancouver Centennial Stage. She toured BC in 2013/2014 with Fowl Mouth McPhee, played at the Country Music Hall of Fame, and opened for Streetheart in the 2012 Great Canadian Bike Rally. Fowlie & Friends toured BC in 2011-2012 and her band took the main stage at Great Canadian Bike Rally in 2011, opening for Trooper. And in 2007, Karen sang solo at Mountainfest.
Karens recorded works have obtained notable local and national exposure. Songs from Pushing the Edge have been added to the Make a Case Against Racism CD, the Thunderstruck 9 extreme snowmobiling DVD, and several songs have been featured in the Province Newspaper Playlist. Consumers of Hevy D popcorn across Canada have downloaded Karens songs, and her music represented BC in a Trade Mission to Japan.
Fowlie released a seasonal song called Fly (2013), Love Letters to Evelyn (2015), and Christmas is Tomorrow (2015) all in demand for download. And of note, Karen was distinguished in receiving a letter of acknowledgment of her original song, Tell Me from BCs Attorney General Wally Oppal.
Karens passion for weaving music into the fabric of her community is further evident after a decade of working with youth in the Sea to Sky corridor as a music teacher. Shes helped students learn guitar, focus on their singing, write songs and build their stage presence in jams / talent shows. Karen also hosts a very popular weekly jam at Hugos Restaurant in West Vancouver, where for over three years now musicians from all over Vancouver make the trek to join her for an evening of top quality music.
