WIT - Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning Masterpiece
PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING MASTERPIECE WIT OPENS IN JANUARY! Opening January 11th, 2008, The Production Company is proud to present Margaret Edson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play WIT; a dazzling and humane play that you will remember till your dying day" -NY Magazine. WIT is a truly extraordinary work which brings light, humor, and grace to some of humanitys most difficult questions. The play opens with Vivian Bearing, a fifty-year-old English professor specializing in the poetry of John Donne, contemplating her experiences as a cancer patient. Vivian flashes back to her teaching days when she was a hard-nosed professor with tight-fisted control over her classroom. This dubious past proves a stark contrast to her current role as a helpless and frustrated patient and to her family life when she was just learning both the joy and distance that her deep appreciation for language ultimately brought her. Vivian's doctors see her as little more than a research project as they try experimental treatments that take a toll both physically and emotionally. Dedicated to learning above all, she valiantly endures her treatment in the pursuit of knowledge. As Vivian's body and mind deteriorate, she begins to come to terms with her mortality with the help of a supportive nurse, Susie, who seems to be the only person who views her as a fellow human being. Vivian finally attempts to reach out to one of her young doctors - a research fellow named Jason Posner who had been her student once, but she realizes that, like herself, he focuses on research and scholarly pursuits over the pursuit of personal happiness. Perhaps the most remarkable miracle of this production is that it is illuminated brilliantly by soaring heights of comedy and joy through Vivian's engaging and indomitable WIT.
WIT is directed by Robert Mammana, director of the critically heralded Elizabeth Rex (8 Ovation Nominations) and stars Karesa McElheny, who was noted for her stunning performance as Queen Elizabeth in that production. The play features the impressive supporting cast of Paul Denniston, Sean Faye, Ellyn Jaresko, Shelly Kurtz, Aubrey Saverino, & Marbry Steward.
