New Veterinary Feed Directive explained at next Livestock Round Pen
Did you know that after January 1, 2017, drugs deemed medically important to humans, many of which are currently available in feed and over-the-counter at feed supply stores, will require a Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) if given to food producing animals via food or water? To obtain a VFD, livestock owners must have an established veterinarian-client-patient relationship. This new directive may impact significantly how some large- and small-scale producers source and use medicated feeds and/or animal health products. For example, a popular medicated chick feed will no longer be available to poultry enthusiasts without a valid VFD in place. To learn more about the directive and how it may affect your livestock operation, we encourage you to join us Thursday evening, July 7, 2016 from 7 PM to 9 PM at the Longhouse at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, 14405 179th Ave SE, Monroe, WA for the next Livestock Round Pen. To help us understand this new mandate, Dr. Amber Itle from WSDA will give a short presentation on the VFD and answer questions regarding implementation. After the VFD presentation, we'll break into informal discussion groups with tables devoted to each species: cattle, goats, sheep, swine, camelids, and poultry. Lead by Dr. Susan Kerr, WSU NW Regional Livestock and Dairy Extension Specialist, there will be opportunities to engage with experts, veterinarians, and other producers; ask and answer questions; learn about the latest news affecting livestock producers; and discover new resources to help improve and expand healthy livestock production throughout Western Washington.
Sponsored by WSU Snohomish County Extension, Snohomish Conservation District, and the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, the event is free and open to everyone interested in, or currently involved with, livestock production. To ensure we have enough resources available, we encourage you to register online at RoundPen.BrownPaperTickets.com by July 5, 2016.
