Songwriters Night 2016
Join Jan Bramlett, Jeff Kelly, Tamalyn McDonald and Paul Oliphant for an intimate evening of music in Dell'Arte's Carlo Theater. Doors open at 7pm. Show starts at 7:30. $8 (or $6 for Humboldt Folklife Members).
Jan Bramlett brings a light touch to profound subject matter, blending wry humor with deep insight into human nature. Her strong, bluesy voice sweeps through lyrical melodies that hold fast long after you first hear them. While her solo sound is "folky," her songs reflect a broad range of influences from blues to rock and roll, from quiet heartfelt ballads to a more jazzy feel, particularly when she is playing with a full band. Bramlett has been singing and writing songs for years, but she really began focusing on her original work after she moved to Arcata in 2008. She has co-produced a local Joni Mitchell Tribute Show four years in a row, and has opened for Bay area band Blame Sally and beloved troubadour Casey Neill.
Jeff Kelley sings songs of life, death, and silliness. Taking lessons from folk traditions and rock legends, Jeff has invented a voice all his own. His writing reveals the clever mind of a pint glass philosopher who has lived an ordinary life of tragedy and joy. With his bluegrass flat picking style, he sings like an urban country boy making tea from herbs gathered in vacant lots. He'll bang out a rock tune with that same flat pick and suggest that you live now, die later. Then he'll put down the flat pick and pluck those steel guitar strings with his own invented finger style, and bring tears to your eyes with songs of loss. Then he'll follow that up with a ridiculous story song where you have to try not to laugh so you won't miss anything. With over thirty-three years living in Humboldt County, scrawling out lyrics with a ball point pen in countless notebooks and on pub napkins, and sitting behind a guitar setting them to music, Jeff has a rich repertoire of songs and stories to share.
Tamlyn McDonald has been performing since the age of 4. In her early years she travelled and performed with the Los Angeles children's choir. In her teens she studied piano and classical voice with full intentions of pursuing classical voice and opera. Somewhere along the way , while in college she was introduced to Jazz and folk music and discovered a passion for more rootsy, soulful genres! In her early twenties , heavily influenced by songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Gregg Brown, Lucinda Williams, Welch and Rawlings .. Etc.. Tamlyn found herself firmly planted In the acoustic music scenes of Utah and Colorado. Many years were spent playing old time and folk festivals in the region with her family band until recently she finds herself full circle, in her childhood home state of California, a seasoned songwriter who's itching to get back to her roots as a jazz and classical vocalist but with a firm foot still planted in country, blues and old time music.
Paul Oliphant was born on redwood treetops and dive bar pool tables. Paul's varied original tunes attempt to encompass what life would have been like as a jovial Viking bard in love with a strong West Coast woman. Oddity and fun with a grassy chaser, this Humbacino native is bound to his music and his passion for progression.
Don't miss these talented songwriters!
