Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents The Liberation Music Collective!
The Liberation Music Collective is a socially conscious big band dedicated to performing original compositions about contemporary social issues. The band is based in Bloomington, IN and is comprised of students and alumni of Indiana Universitys prestigious Jacobs School of Music. The LMC brings a fresh 21st-century approach to the tradition of protest music in jazz, following in the footsteps of Charlie Haden, Max Roach, Charles Mingus, and many others. In addition to the jazz canon, the LMC draws from the plurality of genres present in America, including hip-hop, Afro-Cuban music, Sacred Harp hymns, Islamic liturgy, and post-modern classical music. By focusing on social issues and embracing this plurality of styles within a jazz context, the LMC hopes to bring jazz back into the socially provocative music of our era.

Matt Riggen was raised in Avon, Indiana and began his tenure at Indiana University as a biology major. However, his true passion has always been jazz, and in his junior year, he joined the jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music. Matt studies with Pat Harbison and Joey Tartell and has worked closely with 6-time GRAMMY nominee Wayne Wallace in his academic big band and Latin Jazz Octet. Matt is an avid fan of Omette Coleman and Charles Ives, and composes with heavy influences from experimental classical music and free jazz. He brings a riotous energy and boundless imagination to the Liberation Music Collective, whether as composer, conductor, or trumpet player.
Hannah Fidler was raised in Bloomington, Indiana and is currently pursuing a degree in jazz bass and neuroscience at Indiana University. She studies with Jeremy Allen and has worked closely with GRAMMY nominees Michael Sprio and Wayne Wallace in their Latin Jazz Ensemble and Afro-Cuban/Brazilian combos. Hannah is a veteran world traveller and brings her experiences with international music to her compositions with the LMC. She also has extensive experience in activism, having dedicated much of her youth to fair trade, sustainable food, and domestic violence awareness. Hannah brings her passionate and fearless leadership to the LMC as composer, bassist, and administrator.
