A Kind of Alaska by Harold Pinter The Letter of Last Resort by David Grieg Directed by Lloyd Arnett
A KIND OF ALASKA In the early 20th century, approximately five million people contracted encephalitis lethargica, commonly known as sleepy sickness. This mysterious illness was the inspiration for Oliver Sacks book Awakenings which, in turn, inspired this play. This provocative story introduces us to Deborah, who awakens from a sleep of 29 years unsure of who she is. Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter involves us in the drama as he challenges us to piece together the glimpses of her life into a meaningful picture for her sake, and for ours. THE LETTER OF LAST RESORT David Griegs play is a fascinating and all-too-timely conversation between a new Prime Minister of the UK and a government official. The PM must write a letter of last resort to tell the commanders of the trident submarines what to do in the event that the government has been destroyed by nuclear attack. But what is the right instruction?
