The Medea Project
The Medea Project directed and created by Sandra Brunell Neace has been accepted into the 2012 NY International Fringe Festival and will perform in New York City in mid August 2012. The Medea Project is an original work created by Neace and the Medeas and based on the Greek Tragedy Medea. The Medea Project explores maternal filicide and the responsibilities of mothers, women and citizens in modern society. Neace uses themes in Euripides' Medea, translation by Nicholas Rudall, and blends writings of play's cast to create a tapestry of past and present with the deeply charged issue of maternal filicide in our society. This ancient issue driven by human motivations crosses into the current day as Neace engages the audience with multi-media and highlights true stories that have shocked and saddened our nation. The piece features actresses from northern Nevada whose work includes professional, regional and community theatre credits. This unique, female driven theatre piece gives the audience the opportunity to understand the different sides of this tragic event and give voice to not only judge and jury, but to Medea who has committed the unspeakable act of child murder. The Medea Project was originally commissioned by Brüka Theatre's Producing Artistic Director Mary Bennett as a sister piece to Oedipus and was performed on the Brüka main stage during the 2011 Artown Festival. The NY Fringe Festival is a juried selection process and selects shows based on merit and artistic quality. Local theatres including Brüka Theatre, Reno Little Theatre and Good Luck Macbeth to raise funds and awareness for the project including the trip to New York will produce The Medea Project in late July and early August, 2012. Each venue will host a reception following the performance. All funds raised will go toward getting the production to the NY International Fringe Festival.
