KGNU's 28th Annual Charles Sawtelle Memorial Mountain Jam
Slow-cooked, Texas-style barbeque, side salads, homemade desserts and micro-brew beers from Twisted Pine Brewing Company and Avery Brewing accompany amazing acoustic music at the Gold Hill Inn in Gold Hill, CO for the 28th Annual KGNU Charles Sawtelle Memorial Mountain Jam.
A KGNU tradition, The Charles is named for Hot Rize guitarist Charles Sawtelle who helped start the event in 1989 and was a great supporter of KGNU Community Radio. After his passing in 1999, the station renamed the event in his memory. This is a family-friendly event for music fans that enjoy mountain air and great food in a spectacular setting.
The festivities get started at 11:30 am and run until 4:30 pm on Sunday, July 24th, and features music sets by Rapid Grass, Katie Glassman and Snapshot, and Free The Honey.
Rapidgrass is a super rad, high-energy, fusion string-band made up of old and new friends from the front-range Colorado bluegrass scene. In 2015 they won the Rockygrass Band Competition. Rapidgrass' lineup includes Mark Morris on guitar and vocals, Kyle James Houser on banjo and vocals, Alex Johnstone on mandolin and vocals, Coleman Smith on fiddle, and Marl Meinecke on bass.
Katie Glassman and Snapshot is a Denver based traditional western swing band known for their style of vintage songwriting with cowboy flavor. The group consists of Katie Glassman on fiddle and vocals, Eric Moon on piano, accordion and vocals, Greg Schochet on guitar, and Charlie Mertens on upright bass and harmony vocals.
From the western slope of Colorado, Free the Honey offers up original and traditional tunes with richly layered vocal harmonies and authentic acoustic resonance. Together Jenny Hill, Lizzy Plotkin, and Katherine Taylor create a sound inspired by place, community, and deep musical traditions rooted in the Americana soundscape with hints of gospel, blues, country, gypsy, and jazz, their own original tunes.
