Anna Vogelzang has been making melody-driven, multi-instrumental folk-pop ballads since 2000, playing them in public since 2003, and sharing them on nationwide tours since 2007, gaining fans across the country and enticing publications like The Huffington Post to assert that few craft a better folk song.
The strength of her vast body of work has landed her at festivals and on bills with some of her heroes, including Sara Bareilles, Gillian Welch, Chris Pureka, Mirah, Anais Mitchell, Laura Gibson, Wye Oak, Steve Poltz, Mason Jennings, Amanda Palmer, and many more.
In April of 2015, after writing more than 70 songs in 15 months, Vogelzang joined producer Todd Sickafoose (Anais Mitchell, Andrew Bird) in the studio to embark upon her fifth LP, Hiker. Joined by percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Shane Leonard (Field Report), the trio recorded 12 songs, hand-picked by Sickafoose, in one week as a live band. The lush, sonic landscape explores the identity of being a human in nature, and the animal nature of being a human.
Released in May 2016, Hiker has won attention from the likes of Magnet Magazine, The Bluegrass Situation, and Relix who praised its warm, engaging folk-pop,. Back at home in Madison, Wisconsin, Vogelzang has remained a steadfast supporter of the arts and her local community, founding Wintersong, a holiday event that has raised more than $26,000 for Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin and has featured performances from PHOX, Count This Penny, Corey Mathew Hart, and Vogelzang herself.
"I am so grateful that Madison has been my home for the past 8 years; the Madison community has supported me as I've grown and explored as a musician, and has provided a solid, beautiful foundation for me. I cannot express how important this place has been, how lucky I feel to be a part of this community. As academia pulls our family westward to Los Angeles, I wanted to throw a farewell bash that was a true celebration of my time in Madison, and couldn't imagine a more perfect location than my favorite room to play in Wisconsin, the Sh*tty Barn. I also wanted to feature a handful the people who have helped to nourish myself and our community during my stint in town: Monica Martin will perform a solo opening set, followed by a full-band AV set which will feature appearances by Cereus Bright, Whitney Mann, Corey Mathew Hart, Paul Otteson, Dietrich Gosser and many more surprises to boot." - Anna Vogelzang
