Miss Sharon Jones! is a verité documentary following a great modern-day soul singer as she struggles to survive cancer and return to her one true home, The Stage. Denied her dream for decades by music executives who judged her race, her body type, and her age as wrong for the music audiences their companies were courting, Sharon Jones' perseverance finally paid off at age 50. Breaking through as an internationally recognized singer, her stage presence earned a nickname: The Female James Brown. Her rise seemed unstoppable. Then, two years ago on the eve of the release of what would become her first Grammy nominated record, Sharon went to the doctor experiencing severe stomach pains. The shocking diagnosis was Stage Two Pancreatic Cancer and an unfathomable 50/50 chance at survival. "I no longer know who I am going to be as a performer and that scares me," Jones confided to the filmmakers early on. They were present for every intimate moment as she and her band mates, the Dap-Kings, put the album on hold, canceling months of concerts so Sharon could undertake a literal fight for her life - and for the well-earned music career suddenly in jeopardy. This is the story of an underdog who achieved great success only to become an underdog again thanks to a cancer diagnosis. She faced it the way she had faced her improbable music career at a younger age - against all odds, she never gives up. Miss Sharon Jones! is a musical journey, tracing Sharons unlikely rise, sudden fall, and rise again.
