Jay Rattman Quartet Residency Night
The Jay Rattman Quartet brings together four of the brightest rising stars of the New York jazz scene today, hailing from around the world to bring a unique sensibility in their collective approach to playing. Their forthcoming debut album, "In the Towns," which takes the title track's name from a phrase in John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath," is a freewheeling musical exploration of America through the lenses of literature, history, vernacular musical styles, and Rattman's own experiences growing up in Pennsylvania, exploring the Rocky Mountain West, and residing in New York City for the past 10 years.
Rattman, hailed by Phil Woods as "a giant of the future," is an accomplished composer and improvisor on saxophone and clarinet. He has recorded on over 20 albums as a sideman. He has also appeared on NPRs Sound of Young America, The Late Show, and The Tonight Show. His efforts as a composer were recognized with an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award.
An active member of the German Jazz scene, pianist Can Olgun moved to New York in 2008 to pursue a masters degree at the renowned Manhattan School of Music sponsored by a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Soon he established himself as a fresh voice on the New York jazz scene. Mr. Olgun worked and played with musicians including David Friedman, Seamus Blake and Mark Turner and tours frequently with many different bands throughout Europe and the US. He was a semi-finalist in the 2010 Martial Solal Piano competition in Paris as well as the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in Washington D.C.
Born in Jerusalem and raised in Buenos-Aires and Tel-Aviv, Or Bareket is quickly establishing himself as one of the most versatile bassists on the NYC jazz scene. Winner of the 1st prize at the International Society of Bassists' jazz competition in 2011, Ors diverse heritage informs his distinct style. His approach to improvisation is informed by Mediterranean, South American, and North African folklores, all interpreted through his deep knowledge and appreciation of the American Jazz tradition. Since moving to New York, Or has performed, recorded, and toured with a wide array of artists all over the world. Notable names include Ari Hoenig, Jean-Michel Pilc, The 3 Cohens, Don Friedman, Eliot Zigmund, Billy Hart, and Victor Lewis, as well as younger artists such as Gilad Hekselman, Cyrille Aimee, and Yotam Silberstein.
Born and raised in Paris, drummer Guilhem Flouzat moved to New york in 2009. He has collaborated with the likes of saxophone giant Dave Liebman, guitarist Lionel Loueke, multi reed player Steve Wilson, pianist Tigran Hamasyan and guitarist Gilad Hekselman. His sophomore album "Portraits" Sunnyside was praised by New York Times as "smart and agile", while Thomas Conrad from Jazztimes called Flouzat " a drummer who operates within an ensemble like a sophisticated composer". As an accompanist, Flouzat cultivates versatility and often supporting singer Sarah Elizabeth Charles.
