In Egypt & North Africa - 1971 to 1997: Traditions of Music and Dance
In 1971, renowned Middle Eastern dancer Aisha Ali traveled to Egypt and North Africa, the first of many trips where she was to live among, dance and observe various tribes of the regions while documenting her fieldwork. Ali's lecture will include her photography and recordings of the Nawar gypsy performers of Upper Egypt, the Ouled Naïl, an Algerian tribe known for its dancers and musicians, and the Bedouin and Berber chaabi dances of Tunisia. The evening concludes with a live performance of Ghawazi dance.
Enjoy the gardens and exhibits of the Velaslavasay Panorama before and after the presentation. Early registration for events at the Velaslavasay Panorama is highly recommended.
