Lisa Geduldig and El Rio Present... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
The 7th Annual Obligatory June Gay Comedy Show!
San Francisco, CA... Comedy Returns to El Rio is a popular monthly comedy show (every 3rd Thursday of the month) co-produced by Kung Pao Kosher Comedy's Lisa Geduldig and El Rio. The show, which just celebrated its 7th anniversary, takes place at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District and showcases an eclectic mix of intelligent, progressive comedians from the Bay Area and beyond.
Join us this month for our 7th Annual Obligatory June Gay Comedy Show featuring: Tom Ammiano (the Mother of Gay Comedy), Karen Ripley (about to celebrate her 40th year in comedy), Ronn Vigh (former joke writer for Joan Rivers/Fashion Police), Yuri Kagan (a nice Jewish boy), and Lisa Geduldig (your faithful hostess).
Tom Ammiano, The Mother of Gay Comedy, has been a stand up comic since 1980 when he pioneered gay comedy night at the Valencia Rose in San Francisco. He is also a legendary SF leader who has served the city for four decades as a teacher, School Board President, President of the SF Board of Supervisors, and has had an unmatched record of achievement as a member of the State Assembly. In 1975, Tom came out as the first openly gay teacher in SF. In 1977 he worked on the No on 6 campaign with Harvey Milk, successfully defeating an anti-gay initiative to ban gay teachers in California. Tom went on to be elected to the SF Board of Education from 1990-1994, the Board of Supervisors from 1994-2008, and was elected to the California State Assembly in 2008. Tom has been at the forefront of reform on many issues including affordable housing, LGBTQ rights, education, labor, immigration, prisons, and marijuana. He has given a voice to underrepresented communities throughout his career.
Karen Ripley a queer comic and improv master and has been featured on LOGO TV. She is a veteran of LGBT comedy and began her comedy career in 1977 (39 years ago!) in the heyday of the LGBT comedy movement in San Francisco. She has performed at hundreds of Pride events as well as The Fringe and Diva Festivals. Last year, Ripley premiered her one-woman show, Oh No, Theres Men On The Land to rave reviews at The Marsh Berkeley. She is currently working on her second one-woman show and just started running a comedy night at The Marsh Berkeley on the third Tuesday of every month. You can also hear her Sunday at 6:30pm on KPFA's Twit Wit Radio.
Ronn Vigh hits the stage with his brash attitude and acerbic wit that once earned him a comparison, by The SF Weekly, to a young Joan Rivers They were certainly on to something as he later became a joke writer for Rivers on her E! Television show, Fashion Police. Effortlessly weaving between edgy and endearing, Vigh performs regularly at comedy clubs, colleges and theaters across the country. He recently headlined Reno Gay Pride and has performed at Lake Tahoe Gay & Lesbian WinterFest, Michigan ComedyFest, SF SketchFest and more. Offstage, Vigh enjoys watching football, hiking, and eating carbs. While that makes him sound more masculine, he still gets called "ma'am" on the telephone at least once a week. He has been mistaken for Lisa Geduldigs son and calls her mom.
Yuri Kagan is a nice Jewish boy or at least that's what it says on the JDate profile his mother created for him. He grew up in San Diego where he learned that while other people tan, he ignites and moved to San Francisco to get a degree in bad habits and telling jokes. Kagan is a dry-humor, observational, deadpan comedian who, without holding anything back, talks about growing up with an entire family from the Soviet Union. He has performed at SF Sketchfest 2014 and 2016, on Comedytime.tv, and at corporate events and comedy clubs all over the country. He is a contributor to Queerty.com and Savage Henry Magazine and received acclaim for his blog and new book Vodka and Limelight, now available in both print and on Amazon kindle.
Lisa Geduldig is a local comic and comedy producer whos the creator, producer, and MC of a variety of comedy shows including Kung Pao Kosher Comedy (now in its 24th year); Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians; The Color of Funny: A Multi-Cultural Comedy Show; and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion.
