MRIDANGA BASICS with PREMA BHAKTI
4 CLASSES ON EITHER CONSECUTIVE THURSDAYS OR SATURDAYS (see schedule below) THE BHAKTI CENTER STUDIO 2E ADMISSION: BY DONATION (see donation policy below)
CLASS DESCRIPTION
Mrindaga Basics is an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of playing the mridanga, the two-sided clay drum widely used in Indian devotional music. These classes are limited to 5 students at a time. Its a great way to learn the basics from a great teacher.
Students will learn mrdanga mantras (the language with which mrdanga is taught), simple beats for slow, medium and fast kirtan, simple tehais (flourishes), and practice beats. There will also be a tutorial on kartals (hand cymbals). Prema will also help students, as much as possible, to learn to sing while they play.
Students will also learn about kirtan history, etiquette and mood, and be given recorded kirtans of well-loved kirtaniyas to study and briefly discuss.
DONATION POLICY
The principle of bhakti is to do for others without motive. In yogas spiritual culture a teacher shares the wisdom of the sacred texts as an act of devotion rather than for profit. This also keeps affordable for all this most important activity, sharing knowledge for upliftment.
In honoring these traditional principles The Bhakti Center doesnt charge a set price for our classes on the sacred texts as well as many of our other courses.
So how do teachers survive? The answer is that pure teachers depend on God and good students honor that by sharing a donation from the heart, according to their means. Gratitude and generosity from student to teacher is also part of the yoga tradition.
For the class Mridanga Basics we suggest a donation between $80 and $108, for the set of four classes, although all donations will be welcomed.
All students must be registered online for this class. We ask you to register and to please leave a donation according to your means at this link.
CHOOSING A TIME SLOT
This set of 4 classes will be taught on four consecutive weeks. Students have the choice to study on either Thursdays or Saturdays as well as options for the time of the day.
