The Bascom Lamar Lunsford "Minstrel of Appalachia" Festival

The Bascom Lamar Lunsford "Minstrel of Appalachia" Festival is the second oldest folk festival in the region and was started in 1967. Bascom Lamar Lunsford, for whom the festival was named, hoped to distinguish the festival by celebrating the region's fine music, dance, and crafts, while creating an atmosphere for preservation and authenticity. Lunsford and festival co-founder Ed Howard created an environment that supported the sharing of knowledge and passion from the older generations to the younger ones, building continuity in the traditions that have been unique to the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Approaching its 50th anniversary, the festival continues this tradition today, attracting people from across the region. Perfect for families, the daytime activities include music, workshops, craft exhibitions, games, apple butter making, dancing, and more. After sundown, the festival moves indoors for the traditional evening concert in Moore Auditorium. The Lunsford Festival takes place on the first Saturday in October each year.
