West of Elsewhere
West of Elsewhere follows the intersecting lives of illegal train-hoppers during the panic of 1893, when the worst depression this country had yet experienced drove hundreds of thousands of people from their homes in search of a better life. To be performed in living rooms across the country, West of Elsewhere is an immersive look at lives in motion, interwoven with original music and evocative physicality. Bringing the force of a steam engine and the expanse of a continent into an intimate space, this is a story of American idealism, hardship, living in uncertainty, and the pursuit of belonging.
The leastaways are a traveling theater troupe of multi-disciplinary performance artists making collaborative, ensemble-driven plays for unconventional spaces. With music, dance, intricate language, and ambitious storytelling, the leastaways aim to investigate the intimacy and communal nature of live performance in living rooms and public spaces across the country. The company was founded in March 2015 by Forrest Hejkal (Founding Artistic Director, Carriage House Theatre) and Emily Caffery (Performance Network's GLASS MENAGERIE, Penny Seats Theatre's ELEKTRA).
