Four-Course Smart Food Dinner
Eat smart food -- go home smarter!
Tuesday Dinners @ Jennie Cooks Catering 3048 Fletcher Dr, 90065 7:30 p.m. $15 online purchase $20 at the door BYOB
Tasty solutions for better thinking: This week the Tuesday Dinner features foods that make you smart: Kale, beets, walnuts, apples, broccoli, chocolate, pumpkin seeds, and berries. Read more about smart foods in this fascinating article from the Rodale Institute: http://www.rodale.com/iq-foods#
It's no accident our recipes this week are vegan updates of the satisfying home-cooked foods Mom used to make. Mother knows best! Try a brothy borscht with meatballs, classic Waldorf salad, roasted broccoli with mac-n-cheese, and chocolate hard topping on vanilla ice cream. Be smart -- eat right!
Menu:
- Russian Beet Soup with Meatballs and Sour Cream (Borscht with potatoes, walnut pumpkin seed meatballs, and cashew sour cream)
- Kale Waldorf Salad with Apples, Walnuts, and Celery (Revisit this classic salad dressed with our house-made young coconut mayonnaise)
- Roasted Broccoli with Cashew Cheddar Mac-n-Cheese (Served with a broiled, salted tomato slice)
- Chocolate Hard Topping on Vanilla Ice Cream (With maca and sweet mesquite flour, served with fresh local berries)

All dinners are vegan. Local and organic where possible. Allergies accommodated; please let us know.

Get in the know with broccoli: Broccoli is full of B vitamins, which are needed in the synthesis of chemicals that help you quickly process data and sort through your memories.
A Harvard Medical School study of more than 13,000 women found that eating broccoli and its cruciferous cousins (Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and cauliflower) lowered brain age by one to two years. These vegetables also provide diindolymethane, an immune-system booster that helps protect new brain cells.

How We Shop
Local, organic, vegan: Another reason to buy organic? Many pesticides are neurotoxic and have been shown to lower IQ.
The primary produce supplier for the Tuesday Dinners is Whittier Backyard Farms, a small start-up farm group in Whittier, CA. Their farming methods are what's known as "beyond organic" -- they create their own compost (including kitchen scraps from the Tuesday Dinners), procure mulch and chicken manure from other urban farms, and sow only heirloom seeds -- chemicals aren't even in the discussion. We're pretty pleased to support them, and to serve you their excellent produce!
This week's menu includes kale, beets, carrots, onions, dill, parsley, and lemons from Whittier Backyard Farms. You too can invest in their farm and receive a weekly box of produce. Contact Farmer David: david@davidkiang.com.
Retailers we buy from in order of frequency: Herbie's Natural Foods in Whittier, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Figueroa Produce. Culturally specific ingredients come from ethnic markets. Wild ingredients are harvested by hand, by us. We've also heard a rumor that Whittier Backyard Farms has some seed starts for wild foods...we'll keep you posted!
