SF Carnaval 2016 Kick Off Party
San Francisco Carnaval has become more than a tradition, it has grown into a symbol of cultural resistence in the Mission District. It is a force that reverberates through the city and shows that no matter the size of the wave, we'll paddle hard and ride that wave in order to stay strong and continue to proliferate the sounds and colors that have made our neighborhood the vibrant scene that you all know and love.
Friday May 27, join us for the opening of Carnaval Weekend in the company of:
MANGUE EXPRESS Brazilian Manguebeay ensemble honoring the music of Chico Science and Nação Zumbi. Bringing Recife to SF with the energy of Maracatu mixed with crunchy guitars and funky bass lines: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXRYzHKxj8DAduqHgOwV_pg
MARACATU PACÍFICO The one and only traditional Maracatu group, based in Oakland. Get ready to hear the rootsy sounds of the African presence in Brazil: http://www.maracatupacifico.com/
SAMBAXÉ & BATERIA FORÇA FEMININA A Brazilian inspired music and dance company, led by artistic director Raffaella Falchi and musical director Alfie Macias. Their mission is to create a fun and safe environment in which to explore Brazilian dance, music, culture and tradition, both in the classes and on the stage. http://sambaxedance.com/
Keepin it Rio-style, our resident DJ Carioca will spin the Carnaval spirit into you in the company of the groovy DJ Izzy Wise.
We also count on the support of our sister organization BRAZA "Breaks até morrer" represented here by DJ Elan and his awesome collection of Brazilian wax.
Start warming up the engines and preparing your body and spirit for a weekend of music and Carnaval Tradition in San Francisco!
