Toxic Beauty: From Puget Sound to Orcas
Do you love the beauty of Puget Sound and the majestic Southern Resident orcas that call it home? As part of the 10th Annual Washington Orca Month, Defenders of Wildlife and Washington Environmental Council, both members of the Orca Salmon Alliance, and the Washington Toxics Coalition invite you to join us for an evening reception and panel presentation to discuss an invisible threat to the Southern Resident orcas and their prey, Chinook salmon: toxic pollution. Salmon expert Dr. Jim Meador from NOAA Fisheries and orca expert Dr. Sam Wasser from the University of Washington will provide background on how toxins impact these species. Luckily, there is an army of organizations working to clean up Puget Sound. A few will take the stage, utilizing a pictures-only presentation format, to tell their story. Speakers are from various organizations including Washington Department of Natural Resources, Stewardship Partners, Washington Toxics Coalition, and Pacific Lutheran University.
For those of age, a reception from 6:30-7:30pm will give you the chance to enjoy beer from Hilliard's and a selected wine from Proletariat Wine Company while visiting with presenting organizations and members of the Orca Salmon Alliance.
The presentation will start at 7:30pm. There is no food or beverage allowed in the auditorium, so come early to enjoy the offerings.
By the end of the night, we hope that you will feel empowered and understand why your everyday actions make a difference for our iconic and endangered Southern Resident orcas and their prey.
